Your machine:http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/im...

has the T7200 processor with an "M" socket: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_M

Replace with any of these: T5200, T5300, T5450, T5470, T5500, T5600, T7200, T7400, T7600[

Here's my post with links on upgrading the CPU: change MacBook Pro cpu from core duo to core 2 duo...

The 2.16 GHz is a T7400, M socket. You can probably take it to a 2.4 GHz T7600, M socket.

would it be able to work with an i3?

Ted you have a fine last name but you're a lazy boy. Learn to use Google. You will not be able to upgrade to i3 processor.

+ Mayor is correct on the best processor you will be able to install on this. The C2D and iCore processors require different sockets and architecture.
