How to reset defaults to make wireless keyboard show characters again?

Wireless keyboard worked fine until my little girl got on it and reset defaults somehow. Keyboard works, but I can tell it's using codes instead of typing the characters. Tried resetting defaults and it will not come back. Help!!!
