Thumbwheel does not respond

If I push on the center of the thumbwheel and the menu button at the same time my LCD on my iPod comes on. I have visible functions that show up on the left side of the video screen with video on the right. Seconds later the LCD display turns off. During this process I cannot access the commands by the thumbwheel or the command keys that surround the thumbwheel.
