What are reasons for a iPod touch backlight to not light up?

Hello, I am going to purchase an iPod from someone and the only fault is that the back light does not work. It turns on to start with but then it goes off. My first thought was that it needs a New LCD but after some research I have found out that sometimes faulty back lights are linked in with a chip on the motherboard.

I just want to know what can cause a back light to play up before I purchase it as I would like a simple fix :) Thanks

Josh Wright, if it briefly lights up on start up but then turns dark, it is more an issue of the backlight coil and/or the backlight IC. Both of those repairs require skill and tools to solder on the logic board. Unless you are comfortable with that, I would advices to either not purchase it on be content to not have a display.

I'm fairly comfortable with soldering I've done a few dock connectors in the past :)
