Microsoft Surface magnesium case broken, can I repair?

Thanks for reading,

My wife dropped my Mircrosoft Surface and the magnesium case broke around the edge. What is the best course of action?

Get ready for a long shot: can I buy an inexpensive replacement magnesium case and then easily replace the broken part?

Thanks again,

Will

Well since the surface is a fairly new product i dont think there are any replacement cases for it, although i dont imagine there will be any magnesium cases except those made specially for microsoft by component manufacturers.

You could try to contact customer support to see what would be the cost of replacing the case. Im guessing your still in the warranty period so user teardown should be considered as a last ditch solution.

Also if the break is not that bothering you could try to cover it up with one of the cheap surface covers available on the net. Until cheap backcases become available.

By contacting customer support (like you suggested) I found that since my Surface was so new, I could still sign up for the extended service plan ($99). This plan covers drops and spills, so I get my Surface fixed now and possibly (god forbid) in the future.

Thanks

OK, I'll bite how do you repair casted magnesium so the repair is as strong as it was designed to be? As far as I know this can't be soldered or welded without weakling the temper of the metal. Besides the cosmetic aspect of the finish being damaged.
