Why won't my G3 Desktop icons open?

My iBook is from 1999 and I haven't used it since early 2005. The issues are that the battery is drained (but it still powers up with AC cable), the keyboard and trackpad/clicker work (but I cannot open any folders or applications), I also was hoping I could peek into it through my Mac PowerBook by connecting via an ethernet cable but this doesn't seem to be working. Does anybody have a thought or suggestion? Thanks everybody!

Options

Connect via a Firewire cable holding the "T" key down on the old machine. Then run disk utilities on it to repair any problems and/or recover any data.
