The only problem I am aware of is the possible inability to boot from a firewire to usb external hard drive. I did a web search and could find nothing about this causing any over heating problems but maybe rab and nick know something I don't.

There are lots of different kinds of cables and adapters to do this, here's a link to several: http://www.usbfirewire.com/uadapters.htm...

Here's another: http://cableorganizer.com/cables/usb-fir...

A good option, save replacing with a MBP, is a IoGear USB 2.0 / FireWire combo HUB. It will give you the ability to transfer your data to and from FireWire 400 as well as give you extra ports. Down side is I think it will have to be plugged into power so you do not get your freedom with this item. Here is a link that you can look at:

Hope this helps

200% faster or not speed isn't really an issue. The problem is Firewire and USB use two completely different protocols and technologies for sending and receiving data.

Pixela did make an adapter for a short time but now it's almost imposable to find. And it only worked for transferring video/sound feed from a video camera using windows (via bootcamp, vmware, etc...)

In short, take the MacBook back and get a Pro or Mac Mini.

Some good info from Wikipedia on the subject:

From what I know, no, firewire 800 is so much faster than USB 2.0, in fact, almost 200% a fast, that the firewire host would try to send information too fast for your USB card to handle, could be dangerous and lead to it burning up.

Not an issue--in fact USB 2 is almost the same speed as firewire 400. See the geek's answer.

Whoa, that's bizarre. I wonder how it works...

Maybe its intended for just sending from USB to FW, I mean, as both myself and nicksmacandpchelp have stated, going FW to USB would burn out the board

by

You know this for a fact or is it just an opinion. I try to answer the OP's question--I don't state something as fact unless I KNOW that to be the case. This may or may not work for him I am merely answering the question.I would think however that a product that burned up customers computers would not be long on the market. If you have PROOF otherwise please state it and I will remove this post. Ralph I said proof--not speculation.
