Are there diagnostic LEDs somewhere on a EMC 2118?

I have an imac emc 1218 model a1207 that freezes after running for 10 to 30 minutes. I don't have the original disks to run AHT. It freezes in safe mode as well. May need to check the power supply voltages since it was made in late 2006. Need to try to test the ram as well.

If it freezes I can shut it down with the power switch, unplug the line cord, wait awhile (maybe an hour)

plug it back in and it usually starts normally.

Lately there have been a lot of the spinning beach ball.

Are there diagnostic LEDs on this model somewhere?

I did read here that this model is not known to have capacitor issues, but it is about 6 years old.

Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Post the last 3 numbers of your serial number. That will help to properly identify your computer.

The last 3 of the serial number are VUV.

Thanks

Jules "The iMac (20-inch Late 2006) has three built-in diagnostic LED's and a front power-on/sleep LED on the main logic board that can help you to troubleshoot the computer.

To Access the Diagnostic LED's:

1. Follow the take apart instructions to remove the RAM access door, front bezel, and lower EMI shield.

2. Locate the SO-DIMM slot and LVDS video connector. The three diagnostic LED's 1, 2, and 3 are located below the battery and to the right of the memory slot. Note that the LED's are marked 1, 2, 3 as show below. An additional front bezel LED is located in an opening at the center of the right speaker.

Block Image

LED #1

• Indicates that the trickle voltage from the power supply has been detected by the main logic board. This LED will remain ON whenever the iMac is connected to a working AC power source. The LED will remain on even when the computer has been shut down or put to sleep.

The LED will turn off only if the AC power source is disconnected or the power supply is faulty.

LED #2

• Indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.

LED #3

• Indicates that the computer and the LCD display are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated.

I am not a Mac person, but I hope this helps, good luck.

Pull it apart. Your freezing is caused by the GPU atheon x1600 solder. If you are able to flip the mother board apply a soldering iron to the contacts on the other side of the 1600 chip. (60 sec. per contact) This will cause them to re-connect properly. Some people have applied butane flame (crack pipe lighters) to the top of the X1600's and other graphic processors in iMac's with some success. Thermal paste is important when re-assembly happens.

Will, Do you have an image of this? I have two of these systems I would like to try this on. I have it taken apart now and see the ATI chip after I removed the copper heatsink. Which contacts need to be "re-soldered"?
