gray screen, gear spinning, keeps restarting itself

tried to perform a factory reset in single user mode now im lost. It says may need to modify files /sbin/fsck -fy and /sbin/mount -uw/

This is a software issue and policy of the forum is not to do much with them.

If you've altered or deleted system files you'll have to do a reinstall of the OS. If you didn't delete any files from Single User Mode run sbin/fsck -fy, if errors are found and the file system modified run it again until it reports either "no errors were detected" or "all errors were corrected"

If disk repair fails you need the install disk tools or a heavy duty third party disk repair application (DiskWarrior, Drive Genius3)
