I just bought a new battery for my Macbook Pro 13 inch mid 2010 and I replaced it following all the steps. The macbook will not turn on without the charger plugged in. Furthermore, it says that the battery is not charging and that I should replace it now. Are there any drivers or software needed or is it possible that the new battery does not work?

It's a distinct possibility, especially if its not from Apple. Batteries are known to fail straight out of the box, Apple QC is better than most, even they have had to recall batteries.
Double check that the connectors are clean, the connections good (some times things "appear" connected, but are not).
Sometimes a PRAM SMC reset can fix this problem - if it can't contact your vendor about this.
