Which hardrive and ram should I buy for my Mac Mini A1176?

My Mac Mini 1,1 Intel Core Duo is making a clicking sound. Apple says that the hardrive is dying. Is the hardrive the most likely cause or could something else be causing the problem?

If necessary I would like to replace my current hardrive and increase the ram. The hardrive that came with the computer is 100gb, the processor is 1.66ghz and the ram can go up to 2gb. The hardware overview memory says that the computer has 1gb of memory.

The 3 hardrives that I am considering are the Western Digital 500gb and the Seagate 500gb and 750gb. I am considering getting 2 1gb memory cards since I believe the computer currently has 2 500gb memory cards.

Thank you for help.

Depending on what HD you have in your system now you might be able to get it replaced under warranty by the HD manufacture (depending on when you got your system). I would start there even if you do plan to upgrade as you can then use it in an external FW or USB case as a back-up.

As far as what to replace your current drive with you'll need to get a model that allows you to lower the I/O speed as your Mac Mini only supports 1.5 Gb/s. Review the spec sheets of the exact model you are planning on using to make sure it has a jumper to set the I/O speed. Either Seagate & Western Digital HDs will work here.

And, yes, your system can support 2MB of Ram (2 - 1 MB modules) but no more.
