Do I need to charge new iPod battery before use

Replaced battery after iPod went through the wash. Do I have to let it charge for a certain amount of time before I see if it works?

I left mine on the charger 4 hours (the apple recommended full charge time) on my 20GB 4G iPod and it had a full charge when I took it off. It's working flawlessly.
