You've not really provided much information for us to help you. Try holding down the mouse or space bar at startup... it should eject, or allow you to, eject the disk, which might be an incompatible one. Additional information, such as the point at which your message appears, a video or pictures of your startup could help us help you.

When i start it up all it does is go to a screen that says i need to restart to hold down power button or restart button. The operating system seems to be gone. I have all the disk to run a start up and re-install the OS and all software but can't get the disk drive to open. i tried the mouse button but nothing. it is an old iMac G4 (1.25 GHZ 256 MB 80 HD) i only know that cuz it says so on the bottom. I want to upgrade it a little bit in order to use it. I have a macbook Pro i just don't want to screw it up so for small games i would like to use the iMac.

You've described a Kernel Panic notice - often caused by bad hardware OR incompatible/corrupt Extensions... probably why you were "gifted" with this relic. . . The G4 machine was discontinued in 2004 - that's 9 years ago or, ancient, in "computer years".
