Freezing on startup. Also, freezes when Wi-FI is turned back on.

I have an older Macbook Unibody that has been behaving weirdly. It started initially by freezing whenever I would turn Wi-Fi back on (after turning it off.)

Later, it started freezing during the startup process; it would get to the gray apple screen with the small spinning circle and would freeze at that point. It will sometimes boot properly when I use the PRAM key sequence during startup (hold Opt-CMD-R-P and wait for the second startup chime.) If this doesn't work, I've had to unplug the machine from the power source and remove the battery. I've tried reinstalling the system software without improvement (currently with 10.6.) So I most likely have some sort of a hardware problem.

But what would be the likely fix? Motherboard replacement? Replace the Airport card?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Two words Hard Drive - Boot from your install CD/DVD run TOOLS: DiskUtility-DiskFirst Aid-Repair Disk, also Repair Permissions. Most often hangs and strange application behavior can be attributed to a corrupt preference file (or font), bad Master Directory and/or failing HD.

Thanks! It worked. I can't believe that I hadn't figured that out before today; I was sure that it was a hardware issue causing the trouble. (Doh!)
