sad face will not charge

After I last use ipod, it started to get extremely hot and froze. Now only the sad face with warning sign appears on screen. It also show a low battery sign and will not charge. I tried troubleshooting with the threads posted in Ifixit. I cant reset using the select and menu button due to the battery being drained.

I noticed the hardrive is trying to start up but wont seem to kick in full motion.

Is there any solutions without having to change the hardrive or logic board.

jay, start off by replacing the battery. Watch out for the battery connector, it has a nasty tendency of breaking of the logic board. If that does not work, and the most common reason for the sad face, is a bad hard drive. Get a USB-to-Zif adapter and see if you can run your hard drive from your OS. Format it and chkdsk it. If it is not working, you may have to replace it. Anything after that, will be logic board related. Could be that the power management IC has failed or that you have issues with the connector. Check it for dirt, corrosion and bend pins. Hope this helps, good luck.
