Keeps freezing, battery level fluctuating

My ipod 5th gen has started randomly freezing whilst playing music. When it freezes one of two things happens:

1) After a few minutes it will continue playing but the battery will be very low, and the back gets very warm. The battery level will slowly rise up to where it was before it froze.

2) It resets and brings up an unhappy ipod with the apple support message on. Occasionally works if I reset it again or it will work straight away if I plug it into my pc.

I've read online to try restoring and re-formatting which hasn't helped.

Any ideas?

hans, place your iPod in disk mode and see what your computer can find when you run a check disk. One of two things here is possible. A bad battery can turn hot, or a bad drive that is consuming to much power. Try to format the hard drive through your OS, not a restore through iTunes. Of course, make sure you have backed up your files, and see what it gives you regarding storage space. Be prepared to replace the drive and the battery. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks for your help, I never got chance to try what you mentioned as it's completely died now and rarely gets passed the apple logo screen even when charged. I've just replaced the hard drive and it has made no difference.

Is it likely to be the battery or is it more serious than that?

Thanks,

Start with the battery, and take a close look at the battery connector. It has the nasty tendency of breaking off the logic board, so be careful with it.
