iPod will not restore & the only screen is connect to Itunes?

My son drained the battery of his ipod touch. It will not show if it is charged and the only screen in a usb cable showing to connect to itunes. I can get the ipod to power off and then when powered back on it brings up the same screen.

I have connected to itunes and it says this ipod needs a restore and no information can be read. I do the restore and it tries but every single time i get an error and it will not restore. Please help......

Options

Try a DFU restore. Plug your iPod into your computer and hold the home and power button for 10 seconds. After 10 seconds release the power button and continue holding home until your computer detects the iPod. Now you will be able to restore your iPod.
