Dark Picturtes on Auto Mode

With my 5100 set on auto, my pictures of a store in a mall turn out dark. Can someone recommend a quick setting to try? (beginner)

There are a bunch of things that can cause this.

For instance, if all of the walls are white or there are lights, the camera gets confused, and will think its brighter than it actually is. (Cameras think everything should be a light-grey)

It can also be that if you are trying to use a flash, it just cant generate enough light. On-camera flashes usually work best between 10' and 20'.

Take some test shots in a more normal environment, and you should have less problems.
