This may be obvious, but did you try adjusting the setting for the screen brightness? hit the button twice (like a double click) and your screen moves up to show other apps at the bottom, slide that list to the right, so it takes you to the volume control, and brightness control. Is your brightness all the way up?
If you can't get in that way, go into your settings , under Brightness & Wallpaper. Try turning off Auto-Brightness if it is on.

Sometimes the iPad just needs to be reset to recognize the new part. Hold down the home button and the power button at the same time until the apple logo appears. This should fix the problem; it has worked for me on many occasions.
