Water damaged, comes on when charging, no service, no homebutton

I dropped my iphone 3gs down the toilet, literally 10 seconds. Died on me. Put it by radiator (not on it!) for 2 days then in a bag of rice in airing cupboard for 3 days. A friend has taken it apart & cleaned with alcohol. When its plugged in it comes on, screen is slightly dim & water marked but can see apps etc on it. Firstly when plugged in it makes the sound like its just started charging & does this every few mins, when it first 'fires' up there is one bar in signal then goes to searching then says no service?? Secondly obviously not holding charge so as soon as unplugged screen goes black & nothing there. Thirdly the home key doesn't work! I'm not very technical at all but hoping with info & advice on here I might be able to get a friend to have a go at fixing for me! Any chance of saving it?? Thanks in advance

Ok, update! So I've taken Iphone apart, cleaned what I can including the logic board. Have a new battery which I have put into place, now I'm struggling to get the logic board back in! Feels like there's something pushing it back up & struggling to line the sim card bit up. Just doesn't seem to be pushing down enough? How firm can you be with it, obviously don't want to force it down & break something! Thanks

Sammi, yes there is a chance, but first I would stop using it all together. Next step to do is to clean it properly. Use this guideto get it cleaned. It is written for a 3G but applies to your phone as well. Next thing to do is to replace the battery after that, reassemble and re-evaluate. Should your screen still be dim, replace the LCD first. It is possible that your backlight has short circuited. If it remains dim, you most likely have shortened the 6R8 backlight coil. It is soldered unto the logic board. Here is a good video on how to fix that. Hope this helps, good luck.

Ok, so cleaned, new battery replaced & realized I wasn't sliding logic board under the sim card bit at the top! All put back together now & pleased to say phone is working with texts (haven't tried calls yet) all my apps are still on there BUT I have no wifi now & the home button still isn't working. One of the prongs on home key seemed to be at a slight angle, I tried to gently push/pull back in place but have no tools for doing so & didn't want to force to much. Any more advice for these issues would be greatfully received! Thanks
