After water spill mac slow, kernel_task at ~300%, how to proceed?

After spilling water on my MacBook Pro last week I left it to dry out in rice and booted it up ~72 hours later. To my surprise it turned on an everything worked apart from the battery (has to be plugged in to work) an it was running especially slow when I was on the Internet. I have noticed that kernel_task is using around ~300% of my CPU and is what's causing it to run slowly. The apple store quoted me £613 to fix it and I am a broke student so was wondering if there was any way I could attempt to fix this myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
