The procedure for changing a car's oil is pretty much the same, with the only differences between models being the exact location of the drain plug and oil filter, as well as the type and capacity of the oil. This video on YouTube seems to be a pretty good walkthrough of changing the oil on a Cavalier, but I didn't watch the whole thing. My Saturn Ion had the same 2.2 liter Ecotec engine, and rather than the suggested 5W-30 oil, I filled it with 5 quarts of 10W-30 because I lived in Bakersfield, CA—a place that gets very hot in the summer.

Based on my research, all engine models used in 2000 Cavaliers take 4.0 quarts. Since oil expands when hot, I put in 3.5 quarts. I check the dipstick after the next time I drive it enough to fully heat the engine (usually about 15 minutes). To check the oil level, park the car on a level surface and turn the car off. After removing the dipstick, wipe it off, re-insert, then remove again to check the oil level. Add more oil if needed.
