Doesn't boot, blue screen with patterns

After chime, apple logo and activity circle and it freezes in this state. or sometimes (maybe by pressed D button by startup) it changes the screen twice - clear blue to blue with small green patterns, with mouse in the left upper corner. I can move the mouse cursor but nothing more appears on the screen. sometimes the activity circle replace the cursor and I hear the HD working. I would like to fix the problem, any clues? Thanks

Answer this question I have this problem too

I have a new situation. I can now startup in Safe mode, but if I try to startup in standard modus, it freezes as described before. I have also run the apple hardware test with no problem result.

Did you accidentally set the disk permission to No Access?

If the disk in question is your Mac OS X startup disk and your computer stops starting up at the blue screen, restart with the Command and S keys held down, and enter the following commands:

mount -uw /

chown root /

chmod 1775 /

exit

Yes it is the startup disk. I have done this, than I got some more text rows and than it stopped. Last row: Oct 5 ....... iMac24-3 /usr/sbin/ocspd[70]: starting

Hey

not sure if you resolved this issue but from experience i have seen quite a few 24" iMacs where the graphics card is causing the unit to freeze

Most commonly the spinning gear under the Apple logo stops spinning and freezes - replacement video card from Apple has fixed the issue

Also worth noting that Apple only Have the higher spec video card available as a spare part - the failing one is no longer purchasable :/
