wont turn on & doesnt seem to be charging

this is my grandsons ipod 4th gen 8gb. this glass screen is broke, but it was still working. he told me the charger plug had some gunk on it when he pluged it in to charge. im sure the battery needs to be charged but it is also about two years old. i cleaned the charging port with alchol best i could. dont know if it is still dirty? ive tried to see the moisture alert in the phonejack but see nothing. my question is i guess is where to start. NEW BATTERY,NEW CHARGING PORT? i know i need to replace this lcd assembly.

Wow, you told that's 2 years old. You have the answer, you have to change the battery because if you recharge now the battery, it will blow (like a ballon). But the real problem is you said that your touch panel is broken and if you dissassemble your ipod, it will stop fonctioning.

maybe just a new cord, happened to me once replaced the cord and it worked. any chance you can borrow a cord to check first
