Fried, over voltage charging. Repairable?

Fried 3gs, wrong charger. Is what ever has broken -replacable?

Tim Bicycle,looks like you will have to disassemble your iPhone first. Look for any obvious damage to the board and the dock connector. Check the fuses on the board for continuity and check for charring around the power management IC. I'd start with the dock connector first....

LTC4088-2 might be the one that could look burned. Hope this helps.

I have disassembled it, to remove the battery which is quite new, I can possibly use it in another 3gs.

Thanks for your comments but I am afraid I wouldn't know what to look for. What could the damage look like? I also don't know what the power management IC looks like. I shall google like mad to see if I can find some pics to compare with the fried phone and identify the parts.

Could the battery be damaged/dead through the over charging?

Yes, it could be, the power would come from your dock connector through the circuits on the board, across the fuses as well as the power management IC. Let me see if I can attach a few images to the original answer for you.
