I held down both buttons and still have a black screen. How would I know if it is off or on? I think maybe my home button isn't working, so now what do I do?

First step is Reset. Hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone begins to start. Usually takes about 10 seconds of holding both buttons. If still black screen. Reset, one more time to see if you can get it to turn ON. If still black screen. Then even if you did not notice it; it is near impossible to open an iPhone 3G, and not accidently loosen the #1 connector (LCD connector). Turn your iPhone OFF and carefully open it up again. carefully connect Flex Cable #1 (LCD ) back to the Logic Board. Then carefully close iPhone back up. Turn it ON. If still nothing, Reset again.
