Which logic board part number do I get to avoid NVIDIA defect?

Just what the description points out; I want to know which part number to get to replace my MBP 15" a1226. Is there one that is known to not be affected by the NVIDIA issue?

Is this a good question?

FYI - The issue was with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT GPU used in some models of MacBook Pro's during 2007/2008

If your ordering the part directly from Apple you'll get the updated logic bd (rev2) as Apple doesn't have a different P/N for the newer version or sell the older part.

If you are ordering the part from another source they could be stripping units down to sell the parts so you won't know until you put it in and run the special diagnostics program to test out the GPU.

Apple is still replacing defective logic bds when MacBook Pros with the problem are brought in to the genius bar. You may need to speak with the support manager and even point him to this Apple extends Nvidia repairs. And if that fails show the manager this Seattle Rex VS Apple

Be polite, and explain you just want your Mac to work without a known defective chip. Of the 10 or so people I've spoken with most have gotten their systems repaired without having to go much further (I've had 6 systems repaired without any difficulty). I should state there are some people who's systems had other problems thinking it was the GPU issue and Apple rightly so did not replace the GPU for them and they needed to pay for the repairs.

If you find you just can't get your defective GPU replaced, there maybe a class action suit. Remember you and Apple both loose if this happens (only the lawyers really win) Possible class action. If you really want your Mac to work it's better to go to small claims court as Seattle Rex did. As Apple has already lost a case, using Seattle Rexs' court records in your case should swing it in your direction. But, just because he won your Judge may think differently. So be careful in how far you go here. If you can bargain with Apples lawyers before going to trial thats best. Good Luck!

Where can we get this "special diagnostics program", I have been looking for it for years.

I was never able to get it either. But, Apple did come in and check out all our systems. Given the fact we're a large account for them I was able to persuade them it would be easier for them to come by with the tools (on a portable F/W HD). The tech stated not all of the boards are marked with the rev ID when the GPU was replaced (in case you get a bare board).

Just to make it clear here this was over two years ago. Since then Apple is no longer servicing this model. I think we have just two of these systems left in the field and by the end of the year they will be retired.

Sorry to tell you Apple as of this May (2013) stopped offering support or repairs & parts for these systems - End of Life (EoL). Here in the states the law is 7 years (or later at their discretion) after discontinuation of the model. In Germany things maybe a bit different on how long. That is not to say your system can't be repaired! It just means you'll need to use an independent repair shop (which still could be authorized to repair Apple equipment).
