Replacing an optical drive is a moderately difficult DIY task. AFIK there are no DIY repairs for a damaged optical drive.

It is common for SuperDrives to stop reading certain discs while reading others perfectly. This is due to CDs and DVDs using different lasers. In my experience, replacing the drive is the most reliable way to fix this issue. It is moderately difficult for an inexperienced technician, but for a seasoned technician it should be a fairly easy replacement. The SuperDrive suggested by machead3 is incorrect, that is for the late 2008 and later. The A1261 uses a 12.7mm PATA SuperDrive. A link to the replacement steps are here
