iPhone wont fully restore, stuck in recovery mode (code 29)

Just got an iPhone 3gs model A1303 from an old friend in school. She said it was water damaged and the screen was unresponsive. The screen is in fact unresponsive. I am attempting to restore the iPhone before I even attempt to replace the screen. Of course my hopes weren't high considering there is water damage.

I attempted to restore the iPhone two times so far and the first time it didn't finish,, the second time it did, but resulted in a message saying the phone could not be restored, with "error 29" or "code 29" I don't remember. I dont see it being financially beneficial to purchase and install a new logic board for such an old phone. Any ideas?

aaron, if I remember right, error 29 is caused by a battery error. The first thing you definitely want to do, is to clean your phone. Untreated water damage can lead to corrosion failure later on. To clean your phone follow this guide. It was written for a 3G but is still pertinent to the 3GS, after that replace the battery. Make sure you get a quality battery since there are issues with iPhone batteries and iPhones doing weird things:-) Reevaluate for any errors after that. Hope this helps, good luck.

A container large enough to submerge the logic board into alcohol? hmm i understand alcohol dries quickly but would this really spare the logic board and not damage it further?

Alcohol does not harm any kind of electronics. Yes, you can submerge it. The most important part is that the circuit board gets cleaned. Done it many of times. Make sure that you use high percentage isopropyl alcohol. The common 70% is not enough.

Ok I have succesfully taken apart the iPhone and removed the logic board. I removed the protective shields and see little corrosion inside but there is some. on the flip side of the logic board I also see some residue. Would I be able to pick up some high percentage isopropyl alcohol at a regular supermarket or should I order it online, and what is the general percentage I should look for? How long should I submerge the logic board as well?

Aaron, I am not sure where you are located. I get my "supply" of 99% alcohol from a local pharmacist. I am not sure about your supermarket, but it won't hurt to check it out. Use a soft toothbrush or paint brush to remove the corrosion. No hard scrubbing on the small components. let the alcohol do its job...:)
