I'd start with a restore under iTunes and see what it does. Since you do have new batteries I think if the issue is not resolved with a restore, check to make sure that all your connections are properly seated. After that a new logic board may be in order :( The battery life for your 5th gen is partially addressed with the iPod Battery Test Instructions available here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1322?viewl... hope this helps to get you started in the right direction, good luck.
