Camera ended up in water, all works except...

Hi

our panasonic Lumix DMC FS12 fell in the in water. I do not know if we turn it on or not. Half a year is gone and all works accept the Zoom lens doesn't come out and in two sec. comes up sign ' system error(zoom)'. Do you think I have a chance to fix the zoom myself? What if the lens is damaged too? Would i be able to fix it or buy a new part?

thank you

Dita

Dita, the first thing I would suggest is that you clean the camera. disassemble it and clean all the parts with 90% or better isopropyl alcohol. This will decrease the chance of failure caused by corrosion. the lens itself is very tricky and intricate. Yes, you can disassemble it and clean it, but the problem could be that the zoom motor is short circuited. You should clean the lens separate from the camera. Make sure that it is not binding on the case etc. The other issues that will come up when trying to repair the lenses, are the availability of parts. They are extremely difficult to obtain. I personally would opt for a new lens. The only other thing I have tried, and had some success with, was to use a vacuum cleaner (I use a shopvac model:) Try to assist the lens by attaching the vacuum hose to the lens while turning the camera on. Attached image shows the lens assembly, the original part number is VXW1000 and the replacement is VXW1059. Hope this helps a bit. Good Luck.
