Sounds like an issue with either the drive or the connector. Either the drive is just dead and not receiving any power or it’s the other way around and the connector isn’t supplying power. I suggest you try checking if the system detects the drive by going into System Information (clamp over a chip) and going to Disc Burning under Hardware. If it does show something that isn't “No disc burning device was found” then it’s most likely a strange software issue that somehow prevents the drive from operating. If it doesn’t, you’ll either need a new drive or connector.
