I don’t know why people are saying it will continue to work, just without Touch ID. On the iPhone 7 and 8 series, if you replace the screen and don’t replace the home button with the '''original''' button, '''all''' home button functionality will be lost.
 
Edit: okay, there are some interesting [https://www.injuredgadgets.com/apple/iphone/iphone-7/replacement-return-home-button-flex-cablewith-charging-dock-flex-cable-black/|replacement flex cables] that kind of work, but in my experience they’re pretty cheap feeling and kinda finnicky, not to mention a fairly difficult repair relative to just a screen replacement.
