Go to “Sound” on your laptop. You can do this by right clicking on the little sound icon on the bottom right of your laptop. Once you right clicked on it, go to recordings.
In “Sound” go to the tab “recordings” on the top, look at all the devices.
That is a picture of what it may look like. Once you find the microphone you are trying to use. Right click on it and make sure it’s set as default, and enabled. Disable the other ones you are not using (I recommend) and go back to it if you need the others enabled.
The fact you have to twist the cord to get audio through the jack, tells me the headset you are trying to use is not very functional. Please try what I suggested and see if the laptop microphone works again then we can get to the other things.
