-I agree with Sam V my 2TB WD MyPassport Ultra initially worked (for several months) on my 2009 MacBook Pro and Windows 8 laptop and my LG SmartTV (all without external power source). Earlier this week the %#*@ thing would not mount on the MBP even though every other similar WD or Seagate external (all without external power sources) works. BTW I've done a complete reformat as opposed to a quick format exFAT on the Windows laptop.

-I've purchased DiskWarrior 5 to see if I can make it work before I beat it to death with a hammer (kidding). Every other electronic device that can use it.

+I plugged the WD My Passport Ultra into my Window 8.* laptop and pulled up Windows Disk Management to ensure I had exFAT formatting and that the partition was ACTIVE. Corrected both, did a safe eject and plugged it back into the MacBook Pro and OSX 10.10 now mounts the drive. It works, try it.
