me too was hit by the 3194 error on my iPhone 5 but the Hosts file solution didn't work, in my case it was the Comodo firewall on my computer that was causing the issue. I uninstalled it and the problem was solved ! I found the tutorial on[http://alternativeto.hubpages.com/hub/List-of-10-Apple-iTunes-Error-And-How-You-Can-Fix-Them|hubpageson [http://alternativeto.hubpages.com/hub/List-of-10-Apple-iTunes-Error-And-How-You-Can-Fix-Them|hubpages] to be effective most of other tutorial including the one from Apple forum were talking about this Hosts issue only without thinking that it is affected to jailbroken devices only.
