It looks like this is an easy replacement. Find a compatible replacement drive and use these instructions. http://www.laptopinventory.com/LaptopInventory.php/Acer/Aspire/5100/CD%20RW
 
There should be a single screw on the bottom and a release button on the drive itself, and it should pop right out. As far as the software install, it should be plug and play. When you power on the laptop after replacing the drive, windows should see it and look for the drivers for it. I imagine this is an easy job. Good luck!!
