How to Replace Field Hockey Stick Grip Tape

Introduction

If your Grays field hockey stick, or any similar stick, is worn down- unravelled grip or a detached cap- use this guide to repair the handle of your field hockey stick.

The handle of a field hockey stick assists athletes in performing skills and effectively playing the sport through holding/handling the stick. A broken field hockey stick will interfere with the fundamental skills of the game and negatively affect performance.

Before using this guide, ensure your hands are clean and inspect the stick (curved end). Typically, any significant cracks or holes in the stick are not worth repairing. Ensure that the rest of the stick is intact to make the repair worthwhile.

Tool List + Materials

  • Scissors
  • Gorilla Glue (or alternative brand)
  • Grip Tape
  • Gauze Tape

What you need

    • Use a cloth and an anti-bacterial spray to clean the Field Hockey stick.

    • Unravel the old sticky tape starting from the top of the stick.

    • Unravel old tape until it meets the end of the handle.

    • Carefully cut the tape so that end of grip tape below can be taken off.

    • Handle scissors with care never holding the open blade.

    • Unravel the old grip tape from the top of the stick that spirals down.

    • Stop unravelling once loose-end cap is exposed fully.

    • Put glue around the circumference of the base of the loose cap.

    • Line up and press the cap back onto the stick.

    • Handle glue with care so as not to spill.

    • Let the glue dry for at least 10 minutes.

    • Using new gauze tape, re-wrap the stick applying pressure in an upwards motion.

    • Once new gauze covers the handle, cut the tape from its source.

    • Handle scissors with care never holding the open blade.

    • Cut the sticky tape from its source before wrapping around the top of the handle.

    • Secure the gauze with sticky tape at the bottom of the handle.

    • Cut the sticky tape from its source before wrapping around the bottom of the handle.
