My Problem

We use the iPod video to play high-quality therapy music, and replacing it with a newer model was not an option, as it doesn't use the same high-quality wolfson chip, and in this case, every bit of quality is important.

My Fix

Opening the iPod was the most difficult step.

My Advice

It's easy to repair your stuff (and

My Problem

The screen will show horizontal colored lines and no image.

My Fix

The steps shown on the online guide at ifixit made it simple to install.

My Advice

It is essential to have a 00 screwdriver to remove the side screws. I had an old screwdriver from one of those eyeglasses repair kits and was able to manage with it, but recommend you buy a long grip 00 screwdriver instead of using one of those tiny ones I used. Good luck!

My Problem

I have a 5th gen iPod, the video variety- It had been experiencing battery issues, it was white and I really wanted a black one, etc etc - A friend turned me onto this site, I ordered the battery and a cover and my first repair went very smoothly. Parts arrived very very quickly, I think three days with standard shipping. Anywho, about four days after completing that repair, this same friend dropped a hammer on my iPod and destroyed the screen. I knew where to turn for cheap, fast replacement parts.

My Fix

The repair went ultra smoothly thanks largely in part to the excellent how-to's on ifixit. The other aspect of it going very smoothly goes to the use of the iPod specific tools which I got from ifixit.

My Advice

Don't drop a hammer on your iPod, but if you do, don't fret - ifixit.com will have it back to operational in a jiff.

My Problem

I always have my 5th gen iPod Video on me at all times. I've had it since 2005 and it's still going strong. I need music at all time if at all possible. I have iPod adapters in both my vehicles, etc. So the other day, in a rush I put my iPod in my back pocket of my jeans, and JUMPED into my truck. I didn't think anything of it figuring the seats are soft enough to give way. Not this time, I later looked at my screen and saw the LCD display was crushed. It still functioned in my car since I control it through the aftermarket radios, but couldn't use it at the gym...DOH!!

My Fix

I knew there had to be a place that sold a new screen, I had replaced my battery in my iPod video twice already. So I searched Google, and found ifixit. ifixit was not the first place I found though, but it was the first site that I trusted, because of it's layout, the product description and product support info. And the price was great, some other sellers are a ripoff. The new screen arrived very fast and very well packaged. Upon inspection The screen was mint. I read the repair instructions once on ifixit (they were that good, that I didn't need to go over them multiple times). And in 20 minutes I had my iPod Video up and running

My Advice

I used to have a case on my Ipod, but they are all bulky and cumbersome. If you are going to use your ipod alot without a case, put it in your FRONT POCKET!!!!

My Problem

Broken Screen

My Fix

Went very smoothly. Everything works perfectly.

My Advice

Be gentle with the connections, and be aware of fingerprints both on the replacement screen and the inside of the glass.

My Problem

My 5th Generation iPod developed some lines in the screen a few years ago. It was still usable. I normally have it plugged in while I use it in the truck so the battery was never used much. But finally, after 6 years on the original, I noticed that the run time on battery was below 4 hours.

The battery on my wife's 30GB 5th Gen was also getting to be a problem. This was the 3rd battery for her. So we ordered new batteries for both and a replacement screen for my 60GB.

My Fix

The repair went well and I had no problems with either iPod. The little clamps that hold in the ribbon cables are delicate. Be careful. Both repairs took about 20 minutes total.

My Advice

In the screen replacement procedure, there are six tiny screws that hold the assembly to a frame that must be removed. These screws are extremely small. Be careful not to accidentally lose them. If they were to fall in the carpet you'll never find them again.

My Problem

Battery completely dead. Screen was damaged 2 years ago (black streaks across), so I decided to fix both at the same time, since the parts were very reasonable in price.

My Fix

Went very well. Separating the two halves of the outer casing was the hardest part. I wouldn't want to try what it takes to seaparate the iPod Classic's all metal case. (I have taken many Mac laptops apart using iFixit's wonderful guides, so I have the tools and lots of practice with tiny connectors.)

My Advice

Go for it. Why waste a perfectly good (after the fix) 30 GB iPod Video? Now we have two of them, so we're going to sell or give away the 2nd (my wife uses iPhone instead now).

My Problem

The LCD screen on my husband's iPod Video cracked and he wanted to get a new iPod so I suggested 'ifixit'.

My Fix

I've successfully used the tutorials before upgrading the hard drive and memory on my macbook but was slightly intimidated by the display repair. Long story short, I purchased the LCD display and tools and used the great guide and voila, 'new' iPod!

My Advice

The one thing I suggest is find the right tutorial and read it step by step before even starting the repair. I think this helps sort out any uncertainty you may have along the way and feel more confident that it will be successful.

My Problem

When I found my daughters video iPod docked in her iHome with a cracked video display, I thought it had finally taken a drop from no return, either accidental or on purpose in attempt at an upgrade to an iPod Touch or new iPhone 4s. I had experience with battery replacement on a Video iPod so after finding the price for a color display to be very reasonable, I decided I would attempt the repair as the ifixit guides are are super easy to follow, what did I have to lose right? Before ordering the display, I decided to take the iPod apart and checked everything (or at least I thought I did), to make sure there wasn't anything else I needed. I ordered, it arrived quickly and away I went.

My Fix

You always need the right tool for the job, so if you don't have them, spend the little extra for the screwdriver. The iPod came apart easily and as expected. I replaced the front panel as well as the video display and was putting it back together but something was wrong as it would not properly close. I tried to force it, which I NEVER recommend and broke the new front panel I just purchased. Upon further investigation, I found the battery was bad. (see photos). What it appears is the battery overheated and failed, causing the battery expand which broke the video display. Fortunately I did not blame my daughter for breaking her iPod. I have come to find out that this is a known issue with these older batteries. I have since received a replacement battery and everything is back in good working order. Thanks ifixit.

My Advice

No matter how old your product, I would recommend visiting your local Apple store first and see what they are willing to do. Maybe I was lucky, but I have been overwhelmed by the level of assistance they have given me, going as far as replacing my iPhone for free when I cracked the screen. Outside of that, free yourself from distraction, take your time and you can make any of these fixes.
