Stories

My Problem

A few weeks ago in the office, my colleagues were grinding some steel while making a contraption. My iPhone was unfortunately sitting on a desk nearby without any protection at all.

Some of the little bits of steel flew to the table and I accidentally scratched the camera glass while moving the phone around.

My Fix

It was very easy. Took only about 15 minutes.

My Advice

If you find yourself in a similar situation as me, don't hesitate to repair it yourself. It's really easy and rewarding.

My Problem

I've been wanting to start a repair business for a long time. An opportunity came my way and I started up. I've been focusing on refurbing damaged iDevices and repairing customer units.

My Fix

The guides on iFixit.com are awesome! It seems that anything that is missing I the guide is in the comments. This makes repairs go really smooth!

My Advice

Participate! When you see an issue with a step in a guide, submit an edit - together we can help to make repairs even easier!

My Problem

Mon fils ayant casse la face arriere de son iphone, j'ai du chercher, et trouver la piece qui allait bien.

My Fix

Un seul mot : magique !

Grace a la video, je n'ai eu aucun probleme pour changer la fae arriere. en moins de 5 minutes c'etait fait !

Mon fils etait content d'avoir un iphone enfin en bon etat.

My Advice

Vous pouvez faire confiance au site ifixit.

C'est ma deuxieme commande, la premiere fois j'ai commande une trousse a outils, pour demonter les iphones entre autres.

Delais de livraison tres rapide.

My Problem

Home button wasn't working, so replaced the part.

My Fix

Was straight forward. The online step by step instructions provided by iFixit were extremely helpful.

My Advice

I felt a bit confused on how to exactly wire up the button ribbon. Took a lot of examination of the photos in the instructions. Really look at how it is setup before taking it off.

My Problem

My friend had jammed his iphones power and home buttons, shattered the back of his phone and messed up the dock connector so that it wouldn't charge anymore.

My Fix

The repair went great except for 2 things. I misplaced 2 screws so I need to take it apart again to find out which one I put where, the back cover won't close because of this. And also the power button replacement didn't work, I think it has to do with the bracket actually (not the button itself) but ifixit doesn't sell these parts so I got it from somewhere else. Otherwise the repair was easy to follow and fun!

My Advice

make sure you know which screws go where. This is important

My Problem

Rear panel and display were broken

My Fix

This was the first time, so it was slow -- but, I was successful. I did forget to reconnect the home button, so I had to disassemble and reassemble an extra time.

My Advice

The video was helpful. Only suggestion is more detail in the video. For example, it would be helpful to have stills with arrows identifying the screws that need to be removed at each step. Also, reminders about things like reconnecting the home button connector.

My Problem

After over two years of carrying my iPhone without a case, I finally broke the screen on my iPhone. At about the same time, the battery wore out, the hold button stopped clicking, and the back panel was scratched enough to degrade image quality.

My Fix

Fine. I went slowly and carefully. I wrapped each part or screw in clear wrap and taped it to a sheet that I labeled with each step. It was tricky and slow going, but it was not as bad as I thought it might have been.

My Advice

Be careful, and listen to this who have gone before you. If you aren't a details/precision person. Don't try it. If you are, have at it.

My Problem

My girlfriend dropped her iPhone 4 and shattered the back.

My Fix

I ordered the Rear Glass Panel repair kit and it worked like a charm. I undid the 2 pentalobes with the enclosed driver, slipped off the broken glass, slid in the new glass, put in the replacement phillips head screws, and that was it. Took 10 minutes.

My Advice

If you broke the rear glass on your phone this is a great way to fix it.

My Problem

To allow me to use an unlocked phone outside the country

My Fix

The guides were really helpful and everything worked well.

My Advice

The guides should also show have steps about assembly. Specially for something as complicated as the iPhone 4 display replacement guide, which has 31 steps

My Problem

After 2 years without a case, my iPhone 4 finally had it's a$$ handed to it by a porcelain tile floor. The front display shattered and I decided to fix myself. Since it was coming apart I decided to replace the battery and rear glass to get it back to 'new' again.

My Fix

Took 1.5 hours but it went back together nice and clean. Unfortunately the camera wouldn't work (frozen on shutter) after but that seemed to be the only problem. I then realized if it was in sleep for more than 2 mins it crashed and powered down. The only way to revive it was a home/sleep button reset. I took the camera out, re-installed and that resolved all issues. Back to 100% now!

My Advice

Make sure the camera goes back in exactly the way it came out. Not sure how or why it didn't work the first time but clearly something was off.
