My Problem
The little black dot on top of the sensor fell off, that little black button fill up that little space that connected the button the sensor..
My Fix
really easy, but be careful witht screws, becayse you dont want to lose any..
My Advice
dont remove the headphone jack YOU DONT NEED TO REMOVE IT just push out the speaker..
My Problem
I couldn't lock the phone nor shut it down
My Fix
It went great thanks to ifixit guides. It took me a while though, but there's a lot of components to remove and then put them back in place
My Advice
Be careful with the screws, they are tiny
My Problem
A friend's daughter replaced this iPhone4 with new per ATT store rep. She said the top button failed six months prior (under warranty then oops!) and the phone would not turn on. I was asked to see if i could fix it. Well, no working power button means it would drain down. Even a quick plug in shows nothing...unles
My Fix
I would never do this for anyone else again. The repair is like fixing a watch: 1mm screws that induce myopia and frustration. Yes, I succeeded but I had to get up and walk away for a bit. It took 40 minutes (not including decompressing time) to complete: open, scroll through PDF (preferred viewing), removing the battery was tough (adhesive prevented battery removal and I figured I would damage battery, hence getting replacement too), the flex cable was PITA to re-install, and the Home button (even with adequate lighting, spudge stick and magnification) was troublesome. Yet, I was satisfied to complete, and in the end, it powered up and charged.
My Advice
iFixit: include all pieces with repair parts. The Power-sensor button cable required precarious transfer of the foam pad and isolator (not mentioned in repair). Apple usually provides these separately-perhaps noting this and getting these parts will help reduce repair time and frustration. The FOUR shield contacts at the speaker WILL break even when gently re-replaced so BECAREFUL. Two broke off on me as the speaker assembly would not seat right. The one screw right of the power button is a #%@! to get a driver on because the display connector blocks the path. I had magnetized my #000 phillips and it still made for difficult seating and final fastening so expect this. Do get a set of spudger sticks (black, anti-static sticks), don't work in a living room or near cats (I don't but reading some other comments, I AM NOT SURPRISED YOU LOST A SCREW IN THE CARPET). Save money, use an ice cube tray for screws. Get a mag/demag for drivers. Most Important: wear ESD and verify mat and outlet are grounded. I chide iFixit for not emphasizing this ALWAYS!
BTW, I am ACMT and Apple doesn't even allow us (no parts) to fix iphones...we just open, inspect and send to depot. I feel for the depot contractors..
My Problem
Lock/Power Button wouldn't function. Think of it as one of those useless snap buttons on your jeans, except the protruding part had worn away in less than 2 years.
My Fix
Needed to take a couple breaks do to frustration and my lack of patience, but a success in the end.
My Advice
When you take apart your phone, put the pieces on a sheet of paper labeled; step one, step two, etc. It makes it easier to put it back together.
My Problem
My lock button would no longer depress unless I applied a large amount of pressure to one side of it. I took my phone apart first, using the guide, to see what exactly was wrong. I was missing the small black button on top of the ribbon cable.
My Fix
Well, I ended up spending multiple hours doing this repair. A few to open it up the first time, 3.5 to fashion a makeshift button using a piece of a gift card and some superglue, and 2 more to take off the makeshift repair and actually fix it with the new part. Be very careful with the front facing camera retainer. It's very difficult to remove sometimes and the last time I opened up the phone I forgot to blow out the cameras lens and left a piece of dust in it. (if it ever becomes a problem it'll be a super simple fix, but right now it's fine)
My Advice
If you don't mind spending $25 to fix the button this is an excellent repair. If you can find the part for cheaper, I would suggest looking, but this part was fine. Also, when pulling the old ribbon cable off, be aware of all the rubber pieces on it. All of these rubber parts are necessary. You will need to transfer them over to the new cable if it doesn't come with them already. (mine didn't)
There's a rubber piece on the back of the microphone that keeps the connector from coming into contact with the screws, (I lost it and replaced it with a few sheets of paper) a piece of rubber over the cable on top of the proximity sensor, and one underneath the cable attached to the proximity sensor itself. It has a mirror like finish and a rectangular rubber square around it. Make sure all pieces are transferred over. (if it wasn't necessary, apple wouldnt have included it.)
If you don't want to spend the money, you can cut a very small square out of a piece of plastic (extremely small! About the size of a dot of ink from a pen.) and superglue it to the middle of the underside of the actual button. If when screwing on the bracket the button doesn't work, you'll need to shave the piece of plastic down. Business card width might be better. The button will work, but won't be as easy to press as it was.
My Problem
It was impossible to power down the Iphone!
My Fix
Perfect Guide -> Perfect Repair!
My Advice
Follow the Guide and you won't have any problem!
My Problem
The power button ceased working and you could not power the iPhone off.
My Fix
All went well until I ripped the headphone jack cable. So I left the parts neatly laid out on the workbench with lables and parts.. then the cat thought he would help me fix the iPhone and proceeded to mix all the parts together. It is VERY difficuilt to tell a 1.2mm and 1.4 mm screw arpart
My Advice
before pulling any cables see if there are others attached or folder over the one you aRE MOVING,.
My Problem
It was annoying not beeing able to lock my phone, and I couldn't take screenshots with it, or turn it off.
My Fix
After dissassembling the whole phone, I was able to remove the broken button and replace it.
My Advice
Mark up where each screw goes, makes it smoother when u put the phone back together
My Problem
Home button did not work, and the noise-cancelling mic was cancelling all sound, so no one could hear me talking on the phone.
My Fix
Home button swap was successful. The power cable guide was missing a step to remove the headphone jack, so I accidentally broke that cable when removing other pieces. It's my fault for not being more careful, but I was very surprised the guide was missing that step (I added it in, not sure if it made it into the official guide or not).
Outcome: Home button works, as does the noise canceling mic. The proximity sensor no longer works, and apparently there is some kind of filter that needed to be moved from the old cable to the new (also not in the guide). Since I cut the headphone cable, the volume controls and vibrate switch don't work. Time for another iFixit order!
Total time: a little less than 4 hours to do both.
My Advice
Make sure you are not skipping any steps! Whether it is due to your negligence or the guide's, skipping steps can be disasterous. Be careful while you are in the phone, it's delicate.
My Problem
My wifes iphone power button stopped working so she was unable to turn her phone off or on, or put it to sleep.
My Fix
I was extremely nervous about having to do this. First, if I broke the phone more, she would be without something that she has grown very attached to, and secondly, taking a part something this small and fragile is very intimidating. It was VERY easy.
I was very impressed with the depth of detail that the write-up provided. I was able to get in, fix the issue and put the phone back together in about 20 mins. We took our time, labeled each part as we removed it and paced ourselves. It was a great experience and I feel much more confident about fixing future issues.
My Advice
TAKE YOUR TIME! LABEL EVERYTHING! There are so many 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 millimeter screws. We made a sticky note for each part as we took it out and it made putting it back together very easy.
