iPhone 4 Display Assembly (GSM/AT&T)

$119.95

Product code: IF182-003

Product Overview

This display assembly will only work on the GSM/AT&T iPhone 4, as the CDMA/Verizon iPhone has a different antenna configuration, and therefore different display mounts.

Other companies may try to tell you that you can independently replace the front glass and LCD, so this product comes with a free, fair warning: you can't, as much as we'd like that you could.

iPhone 4's are great. You can browse the web, play games, make phone calls, and do countless other questionably trivial things, all at the swipe of your finger. However, unbeknownst to most iPhone 4 users, this elegant instrument of information is only a crack away from an ugly, abrasive, fingertip-shredding monster. The iPhone 4 is by no means fragile, but many cases of shattering the front glass have been reported from things as simple as falling out of a pocket to other, more severe situations. A fancy screen protector can help your glass stay as beautiful as the day the Apple factory spat it out, but once the damage has been done replacement is your only option.

The worst part about shattering the front glass on the iPhone 4 isn't the bleeding fingertips that come free with it, it's that you will also have to replace the LCD even if you didn't break it. We hate to be the bringers of bad news, but "c'est la vie," as the Canadians say.

Luckily, iFixit carries all the necessary parts to make this most unfortunate repair as painless as possible. iFixit's replacement display assembly has the same gorgeous 960 x 640 LCD that came with your original iPhone 4, and the fused front glass is even available in white! Looks like the broken screen raincloud has a silver lining after all, except the silver lining is actually a white front panel.

My Problem

Both sides were cracked & scratched badly.

My Fix

Replaced both parts with those received from Ifixit. Repair went well.

My Advice

Before replacing the front display, get organized and familiar with the Ifixit repair instructions.

I wrote a full report on May 19th.

My Problem

Dropped and cracked

My Fix

went OK. Was tough to get the logic board completely reinstalled correct; sim card tray was too tight in the end, and ended up slightly bent. However, it worked.

My Advice

The instructions hint at only taking the large head philips screws out 1.5 turns and that will save some in the reinstall. That was not obvious and I missed that instruction while going through it. instead of windex'ing every metal to metal connection, i washed my hands every half hour and tried to minimize touching - I used tweezers a lot. ALSO: before screwing down the logic board, make sure the antenna connector near the speaker assembly is not under it. It would be great if you actually reversed the instructions vs just saying go backwards.

My Problem

Shattered ATT iPhone 4 (Concrete), I've done 3g and 3gs repair before, this is more involved by a long shot.

My Fix

Time: roughly 2 hours

The great parts:

Disassembly and Assembly were flawless, just follow their instructions. Happy with purchase since it comes with warranty.

The not so great:

1.Screen has a yellow hue (very obvious)

2.Still Retina, but if held up to stock screen, you can tell the difference.

3. Gap between glass and side of phone (light leaking through) but may just need more tinkering to fix.

My Advice

Do not buy Liberation Kit = Phillips screwdriver does not even fit screws in kit, and is too blunt to fit any screws on the phone as well. Better off getting a high quality phillips from a hardware store. At least the pentalobe driver worked.

Magnetized tools are a lifesaver.

After paying close to $130 for tools/screen and getting a close to stock phone, maybe it would have been worth $199 for the replacement.

My Problem

Fell with iPhone 4 in hand, hit the ground face first. Entire front screen shattered.

My Fix

First time with iFixit (but I won't lie, I kind have always wanted to take apart my phone, I'm a bit of a tinkerer, so I suppose my unfortunate fall was serendipitous).

As for the repair, I watched the video first and went over the instructions a couple of times before I got started. Which I highly recommend doing.

First, not including my preparation of watching and reading first, I would say it took about an 1 1/2 hours. The guide is excellent and the PDF print out for your screws and parts is amazing (seriously, use the printout, don't know how I would have done the fix without it.

Went step by step. I will say though, my model had the ridiculous amount of glue, so it took some prying to get that out, slow and steady prying on all sides of the battery. As for the rest, everything was pretty straight forward (read every bullet point on the guide).

Oh and take off the blue plastic covering the mirror on the back of the screen, in the video, it appears that she left it on, but I took my off.

Overall, step by step, it was time consuming but if you followed the images and don't mind messing with hilariously tiny screws, it was a fun experience.

The only downside was when I turned it on, the screen was gorgeous, but I had a deadzone on the left middle side. Every other part of the screen was responsive, except for that section.

But of course the great folks at iFixit sent me over a replacement screen right after I emailed them (thanks a bunch guys). So going over the process twice now, screen works wonders.

My Advice

Some advice, first that iPod plastic opening tool, somewhat brittle, my tip snapped off while I was trying to pry up the battery. So be gentle, like I said, slow and steady (no innuendo, I assure you).

Second, wear gloves, I used a pair of latex, with all the warnings of getting greasy finger tips on connectors, figure better safer with just keeping gloves on.

Also, when in the end I was trying to lift the screen, I found it easier to start at the Dock end of the phone to slowly pry it up and work my around the metal frame.

Finally, be vary careful getting the connectors through the frame, follow the video and make sure you don't get them caught up, and also when it comes wifi antenna, careful with the part that the 4.8mm screw goes into. It takes some delicate work to get the whole antenna out it out, even more so to get it properly back in.

Don't get discouraged and don't lose patience, those two little clips at the bottom are not insurmountable. :)

My Problem

Dropped iPhone 4 into the toilet! Worked for a week then home button died, the phone was still functional though of sorts. So I looked at ifixit and dismantled the phone. All was going well until I snapped the ribbon cable for the screen. :-( Now I was fretting!

So it was back to my old Nokia dinosaur (circa 2003) until I could get replacement parts.

I ordered the screen, dock and home button from ifixit and it arrived within a few days. (Amazing in itself considering I am in Australia) excellent service guys!

My Fix

Hmmm, It actually worked in the long run (about 3 hours). I HIGHLY recommend watching the video as well as the step by step pics.

My Advice

When re-assembling the iPhone4...

1. Ensure you connect the Antenna properly.

2. Ensure you CONNECT the home button, I actually didn't realise it plugged in! (very tricky unless you have excellent eyesight) I recommend a magnifying glass to insert the mini ribbon strip into the hole.

3. Patience. You need plenty as everything is in miniature.

4. Elation! You finally fix it and you have got your life back!

Thankyou iFixit. This site and service is awesome.

My Problem

I had my display shattered, but the followup problem was the microphone not working/working erratically during phone calls.

My Fix

iFixit did have a guide for the second step too and I now seem to have fixed it. I cleaned the screw and holder with some spray and compressed air.

My Advice

a sticker was in between from somewhere.

I took that to the side and it seemed to work

My Problem

I wanted to fix my iPhone 4 back to original condition because I may want to sell it when the new iPhone 5 comes out.

My Fix

There are cheaper fixes available but I didn't want to wait for parts to be shipped from Hong Kong and I didn't want my iPhone to be lower quality than original. The feed back tip's and online instructions were very good. I inverted some tape on my desk and wrote the step numbers on the tape and also notated the screw sizes where applicable and set the screws on the tape which made reassembly easy.

My Advice

A large magnet is handy to recover dropped screws and tweezers are a must for re-assembly. It came out like new, I'm very happy.

My Problem

Loose pockets and concrete surface for a broken iphone make.

My iphone has been a great tool over the years, but it sure takes a beating, this last slip from my pocket while playing football in the parking lot smashed the screen. Being an mechanical engineer, I figured it would be fun to see the inside of this incredibly well engineered device and get back in action bypassing any sort of apple service call/replacement phone p.i.t.a. I decided to replace my battery (life had started to go downhill) as well as the speaker at the same time. After reviewing the ifixit tutorials, I found that the front touchscreen replacement is the most invasive, requiring almost complete disassembly, so replacing the battery and speaker would be no extra work.

My Fix

The repair went smoothly and was successful. I spend a couple of hours doing this, but it was my first time running through the process. On top of that I took my time to not make any mistakes or damage any components, ribbon cables, etc. I prefer to take my time and do it right the first time. The ifixit guide is good.

My Advice

Definitely find a nice tray to keep track the tiny screws and parts. I organized them by dis-assembly step and re-assembly was a cinch. Magnetize your screw driver so that you don't actually have to hold onto a 1.2mm long screw! (just drag it one-way across any old magnet to give it some temporary magnetism). I used 99% isopropol alcohol and some cotton swabs to clean all the contact surfaces before re-assembly. The plastic opening tools got chewed up removing the screen, but I consider them disposable anyway. Unlike my automotive repair projects, I did not have any parts left over when it was back together.

My Problem

I broke my screen when I took the phone apart to clean the home button.

My Fix

The repair went well until it came time to put on the new screen. The clear plastic ring around the front-facing camera wasn't installed correctly. This ring fits like a key into the space around the camera. If the ring isn't installed correctly then it won't fit into the space. I needed to remove the ring so I could rotate it by a degree or two and reattach it with glue. In the process I scratched the back of the screen and the damage can be seen when looking at the screen. Since the clear ring is glued on, I'm not sure how it could possibly be removed without causing damage to the screen like I did.

My Advice

If the top part of the screen doesn't seem to be fitting like it should, it might be because the ring around the front-facing camera wasn't attached correctly. I would consider sending the screen back for a replacement because it is too difficult to get the ring off without causing visible damage.
