My Problem

My wife dropped her (beloved) iPad2 a week before Christmas - which was unfortunate to say the least. On the bright side, it gave me the opportunity to tear open an iPad (and there is nothing an engineer loves more than to tear things apart), so I ordered a replacement screen & tool kit from iFixit.

My Fix

The repair was straightforward, but some of the advice in the iFixit tutorial didn't apply well to this repair because the glass was already shattered. For example, the plastic tool for releasing the glue had trouble with broken bits of glass; I found that a sharp knife worked better in those situations. The iOpener was worth it for the heating pad alone, because that definitely helped (especially in the beginning & in places where the glass wasn't shattered).

My Advice

(1) WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. If the screen is already broken, glass gets *everywhere*.

(2) Pay close attention when you first start trying to separate the screen from the body; the goal is to separate the glass from the small plastic strip between the glass and the aluminum frame, *not* to separate the glass & plastic from the aluminum frame.

(3) Affix the adhesive strips to the screen before you attach the digitizer to the body. It is hard to get it into position if you wait until the end.

(4) If the adhesive strips don't hold well enough (I believe the impact bent the aluminum body in my case), Loctite Stik'n'Seal Extreme Conditions adhesive worked well for additional adhesion.

My Fix

Replacement touch screen was high quality. Tools were good quality with the plastic opening tools being the exception. The edges were so dull they were unusable. The rest of the iOpener package was helpful. The guides were also pretty helpful.

My Advice

I was hestitant to buy the heating pad and guitar picks but both made a difficult repair doable. Go through the guides thoroughly before attempting the repair. Be cautious of damaging the plastic frame between the screen and the case. Damaging it can make placing the new screen more challenging.

My Fix

This is my second time doing this exact repair and it is much easier the second time. Using heat is the key! I would also recommend that if you are replacing the front panel bezel to just cut the flex cable and then remove the piece at the connector in a later step. This prevent stress on the connector.

My Advice

Two things... 1) whenever ordering a front bezel you should recommend the sealing tape. I forgot to order it this time and it is delaying the finishing touches. 2) a WARNING should be in the instructions on the for the WI-FI cable. The first time around I tore the cable. This time I took more time and focused on the cable.

My Problem

My Directors iPad 2 had a cracked front Panel so I offered to repair it. I got the tools together and my wife's hair dryer and set about heating the front panel to remove it.

My Fix

The front panel took a lot of heating with the hairdryer to get the glue to give way. I took my time with this to minimise the damage to the rest of the iPad. The main issue was the antennas top and bottom of the front panel as they did not come away from the front panel easily. I ended up using a cable tie toget in between the antennas and the front panel so I could remove it. Also getting every bit of broken glass off the sticky tape areas was time consuming (More heating and time). When it came time I used the provided stickers to attach the front panel. Two issues or suggestions for improvement would be a guide to where all the stickers go and possibly to make the stickers double sided for where there was limited glue left on the case.

Patience is the key. If you rush you will break antennas or you will come unstuck. The panel itself was great and worked perfectly and all in all I enjoyed the process and the challenge of replacing the front panel. Thank you ifixit.

My Problem

I like to fix things and it was cheaper to fix the glass than to buy a new one.

My Fix

The repair is easy except for the wireless / bluetooth antenna. All of the articles that I read talked about cutting the wires. There really are no wires to cut. The problem is that the antenna is very thin foil and is glued to both the bottom case and to the glass. So when the glass is separated from case, part of the antenna stays on the case and part comes away with the glass. Replacing this antenna takes some time and patience.

My Advice

The antenna is located to the right of the home button. My advice is to begin to break the seal in this area so that with a good light you can see in the crack between the glass and the case. Then with a helper holding the heat gun and you working with an exacto knife, you can begin to very carefully peel the antenna away from the glass so that all of it stays with the case.

Also you need to measure the exact location for the home button support cradle, as there are no markings on the new glass. If the cradle is not located in the exact position, it will not contact with the two spring loaded contacts in the case.

The digitizer was shattered. When I was removing the digitizer, the wifi antenna stuck and was ripped.

The repair went well. Removing the shattered screen was time consuming and a little nerve racking. Installing the new front panel and wifi antenna were very easy.

Make sure to look over the material provided by iFixit to make sure the proper procedures are taken.

My Problem

I dropped my iPad 2 about 8 months ago. I have lived with clear box tape over it for all that time.

My Fix

I had prevosaly done the digitizer on my iPhone 3GS t,hre or four times. This was much easier. The videos from infix help other than not actually using broken digitizer.

My Advice

Just be sure you get all the little pieces. Mine took a reboot to work, when I initaly started it the back light on the LCD did not come on, used a flash light to see buttons to reboot. After that perfect.
