Answer to: OS X does not allow me to adjust the volume.
I would first boot the computer from an external source like your installation disk or an external drive and check if the sound works on the external OS. If the issue is a hardware issue it could also be caused by a faulty keyboard since there's a sound control generated by the keyboard. To test this you have to remove the bottom panel, disconnect the battery then the keyboard from the logic board, connect the AC adapter and start up the machine via the two power pads. If you have sound then the keyboard is bad. -
Answer to: Backlight troubles - help me identify the failed part?
If you're tight on money you should get the inverter cable first. Most of the time the cable is the culprit (damaged in the macbook hinge) and the inverter board is OK. Be aware that there are two different inverter cables for the A1181 macbooks, the three walls and the four walls connectors. -
Answer to: Keyboard and Trackpad Not Recognized
Remove the macbook battery and check if the battery has taken expension. Sometimes the battery is bulging and then compress the trackpad and the keyboard connection. Remove the top case, check the trackpad/keyboard connections, reattach the top case to the macbook and try the machine without the battery installed. Let us know...... -
Answer to: DC power connector has slight damage
It's easy to remove the logic board of the A1278 13" model. Just be very careful when snapping out the little black connectors from their sockets (easy to damage). I don't use a spudger to remove them but a small needle that I insert in the front side of the connector and twist it a little on each side until the connector snap off. I never separated a socket from the board using that method. Use a spudger to remove all the other big "snap-on" connectors as indicated in the ifixit guide. To remove the top case ribbon cable from its socket I use a scotch tape attached to the ribbon cable and pull on it to remove the cable once the socket retainer arm is up. I use the same scotch tape method to reinsert the cable in the socket. The LVDS connector and socket are pretty fragiles so make sure to lift up the metallic retainer arm before trying to separate the connector from the socket. Just have to pull out the connector straight from the socket. When reinserting the connector to the socket, give just a little down ... -
Answer to: does anyone know a way to clean the fans
If you look closely at the fans you'll notice that there are 3 three screws and one connector on each fan to undo to remove the fans from the computer. Once the fan is removed just unscrew one little philips screw on the fan to open it and clean the inside with compressed air and isopropyl alcohol (use a Q-tip). Make sure to also clean the heatsink vents with compressed air. -
Answer to: Need help connecting keyboard cable

Answer to: Numerous Charging Issues week after spill
A friend asked me yesterday to check his MBP 13" mid-2012. The unit was damaged by water poured on the keyboard. Before, the laptop was inspected by Apple who told my friend that the logic board, the top case, the fan, the hard drive cable needed to be replaced, a $830 bill. The MBP did not power on but had a steady green led at the magsafe tip and the battery was charging ok. I opened the machine and checked the voltages at the G3hot line on the power pads needing 3.42V for a correct voltage, voltage was OK. Checked the LVDS connector and socket, OK, checked the backlight fuse for continuity, OK. So I removed the logic board and checked the DC in board by installing a known working one and tested the power fuse located near the magsafe connector. All good voltages on board. Just cleaned the board with isopropyl alcohol (90%) and reinstalled it in the machine. Bingo, machine was working perfectly....not parts to replace at all. Maybe I was lucky on this one LOL... Be aware that the genius at the Apple Store a... -
Answer to: What else can I put in place of optical drive?
Yes you can replace the optical drive by a second hard drive. You need to install an internal enclosure that contains the hard drive and the connection to the logic board. Here's a listing from Macsales. http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search....

Installing MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Logic Board
Since this kind of connector and very fragile and easy to damage even with a spudger I use a needle that I insert in the front side of the connector, between the connector and the socket and only apply a little pressure while lifting up the needle. The connector will then pop up from one side. Repeat the procedure for the other side. With this method it's impossible to damage the connector. I adopted this method after ruining two or three connectors using the spudger.
