  • Answer to: Cellphone internet over MacBook yesterday

AFAIK Some carriers allow tethering and some don't. The device definitely is equipped to do this, but the risk of a huge data bill at the end of the month could negate the advantage! Remember: data used when a device is used as a tethered modem will most likely be considered WAP data and be deducted from your "3GB" allowance Some carriers may have to assign a separate data plan. Probably the data will ONLY be included when you are in a 3 broadband zone otherwise you could be charged extra. IMnsHO it would be cheaper and easier just to pick up a 3G (or Next G) prepaid modem and use that for your portable internet connection. N.

I think you might have to make an empty virtual machine larger than the size of your clone then do an import. Good Luck, N.

  • Answer to: Dead HD spinning and making noise 3 days ago

You're not hurting the machine, it's inanimate, but you're courting a HD failure and loss of all data. If there's no sensitive or important data no need to worry but if you have sensitive data that would be a PITA to replace you need to make time for a backup and replacing the drive. Once it fails you will "find" the time that seems so elusive now. HD's fail - five years is a lifetime for some HDs. Laptop HDs are especially abused. You can get an external HD case for the failing drive (that's what you're describing) and put a new drive in the powerbook, format and install the OS, then use Migration Assistant to transfer data to the new drive. Good Luck, N.

  • Answer to: Why is Macbook's USB only working at USB 1.1 speed? 4 days ago

Clean the corrosion with a stiff toothbrush and some contact cleaner, and canned air... (the corrosion could be underneath the board) be sure the contact cleaner dries before firing up the machine. Good Luck, N.

  • Answer to: How can I partition my hard drive? 4 days ago

3GB may be too small for the OS and VMEM/Swapp files (I know there's minimums for certain OS's but can't remember what they are off hand, a search would trun them up)- could you split that a bit larger? N.

  • ATA Device Tree->ATA Bus-> EATS@ITADVD-R UJ 857 ?? Oct 18 @ 10:44 AM

Problem is on a MacBook Pro... Optical Drive will Read nothing, mount nothing, tried several different drives all have the same behavior... System Profiler identifies the device as EATS@ITADVD-R UJ%857

    Disc Burning says:

    MATSHATA DVD%R UB-057:

    Firmware Revision: HAEA

    Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)

    Profile Path: None

    Cache: 2048 KB

    Reads DVD: Yes

    CD-Write: -R, -RW

    DVD-Write: -R, -RW

    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

Anyone have a clue how to fix this?? I have tried using Simple Flash, and Firmware update. The first gives me "permission denied" errors the second claims the machine does not need the update.

    I'm stumped!

    Any bridges or other bypasses?

  • MacBook Pro 15" Display Strange behavior. Oct 7 @ 2:19 PM

    Damaged TFT or Data Cable?

The unit was dropped and landed on rear right side (corner near DVI out).

At boot screen ALMOST appears normal but for two thin horizontal lines dividing the screen in half vertically... as boot progresses the screen divides into THREE vertical rectangular panels, all out of focus, and you can only see movement in the middle 1/3 of the screen, but you can't, for example, see the Setup Assistant.

    No CRACKS.

So anyone familiar with this behavior, and what's the verdict?

    MacBook Pro Aluminum 2.4GHz

    TIA

    Yea -

BTW that's a very low level check of the disk (there's many possible errors overlooked).

What's the manuf. date on the drive? If it's near 5yrs or older IMnsHO it really doesn't make sense to f@rt with it.

Yea - I've seen failed updates pooch a HD... one did in my Hitachi 250GB drive locked it up so I can't format it.

Sounds like your MBD is screwed up.

You did try running DFA-Disk Repair? If you have access to DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius you might be able to resurrect it..

  • Re: installing new 250 GB HD into iBook G4... 2 days ago

Did you get a 2.5" drive or a larger one? You can Target boot the iBook by holding down the T key at startup then you can connect your laptop via Firewire (EEE 1394) to another Mac and use that to partition and clone or install your OS.

When you partition your drive you will have to have at most a 128GB boot partition (Non intel Mac's can't read a partition over 128GB in size for OS install).

    Good Luck,

  • Re: Macbook dead after spilled Coke 3 days ago

Yea - alcohol would have helped too... There' lots of ions in "tap water"... also there can be moisture under components you can't see.

You might still be able to dry it out more if you haven't shorted out some component leave the top off and pack it in a desiccant for 48 hrs (trash bag or rubbermaid container). Try it again.

    Good Luck,

Normally that's a logic board replacement. AFAIK you'd have to buy a logic board to get other RAM modules anyway... soldering logic boards is a very high skill set.

  • Re: Can't shut my powerbook down 3 days ago

What's the last thing you did before this behavior started? Without knowing that it's pretty hard to diagnose a solution.

Sleep mode is not off. Many applications "phone home" and may be waking the computer. Energy saver has a "scheduled wake setting" I have seen that startup computers automagically.

Computers with Remote Access enabled can also be woken seemingly without human intervention... There could be other apps that start/wake your box.

A clean install would not be out of line to try and solve this.

    Good Luck,

    N.
