If you didn't clean it completely: and properly (under the MB, HD and OD) it can still short and fail. You can clean and dry your keyboard (contact cleaner, 99% alcohol air dry using fan or desiccant 72Hrs), absent a known "good" keyboard it's impossible to tell if you have a short in the keyboard, the connector cable, the small circuit board on the keyboard or at the connector on the MB (LB). Good Luck, N.

  • Answer to: display problem: half-size screen after installing OS 9 Mar 6 @ 6:38 PM

If half your LCD is not shot: (I'm not sure I'm understanding "collapses to about half the screen" ) you might try this handy app. It allows choosing odd resolutions. Good Luck, N.

OS 9.2.2 and PPC apps you'll have to search for upgrades/updates to apps (some companies are now defunct or have pulled the 10yr old updates). Good Luck, N.

  • Answer to: iBook G4 hard drive replacement Feb 28 @ 1:34 PM

Try FIREFOX instead of Safari: i - safari (especially early revs) is known for not playing well with others. and some of the sites you like have nonstandard code... (run W3C Markup Validation Service you'll see 25 Errors, 2 warning(s) on the Facebook login page for example... Other browsers are more "forgiving" of nonstandard code: 1) Firefox 2) I.E. for Mac (5.2) 3) Camino 4) Opera You'll need a version that will run on 10.3x or whatever OS you're using. Good Luck, N.

  • Answer to: Powers on only after sitting without power Feb 27 @ 9:22 PM

This behavior is a "known issue": attributed to nvida vchips, and their overheating. Have you: Reset pram: (hold down cmd-option-P-R keys just after pressing power button) keep holding these down. You will hear the startup chime again. Keep holding until you hear the chime three times. The following has worked for me in similar situations: hold down cmd-option-a-v at startup. It's an old key command for use with AV monitors, but desperation makes odd fixes look more appealing... You could try reseting the NVRAM: (command-option-O-F) type: reset-nvram press return type: reset-all press return. Reset the PMU: see this page for directions for your exact model of iBook. If none of the software "fixes" work try the old fire on the vchip solution. Good Luck, N .

  • Answer to: Where can I get a 3.3 mm silver screw? Feb 27 @ 4:52 PM

Did the screw slide under the logic board?: If so you can't leave it as it can short the underside of the board. Have you used a magnet to search around the area you dropped the screw? You could try a drop of superglue; remembering to dissolve it if you have to remove the drive later. Any hobby stores near you? Good Luck, N.

  • ATA Device Tree->ATA Bus-> EATS@ITADVD-R UJ 857 ?? Oct 18 2009 @ 10:44 AM

Problem is on a MacBook Pro... Optical Drive will Read nothing, mount nothing, tried several different drives all have the same behavior... System Profiler identifies the device as EATS@ITADVD-R UJ%857

    Disc Burning says:

    MATSHATA DVD%R UB-057:

    Firmware Revision: HAEA

    Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)

    Profile Path: None

    Cache: 2048 KB

    Reads DVD: Yes

    CD-Write: -R, -RW

    DVD-Write: -R, -RW

    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

Anyone have a clue how to fix this?? I have tried using Simple Flash, and Firmware update. The first gives me "permission denied" errors the second claims the machine does not need the update.

    I'm stumped!

  • MacBook Pro 15" Display Strange behavior. Oct 7 2009 @ 2:19 PM

    Damaged TFT or Data Cable?

The unit was dropped and landed on rear right side (corner near DVI out).

At boot screen ALMOST appears normal but for two thin horizontal lines dividing the screen in half vertically... as boot progresses the screen divides into THREE vertical rectangular panels, all out of focus, and you can only see movement in the middle 1/3 of the screen, but you can't, for example, see the Setup Assistant.

    No CRACKS.

So anyone familiar with this behavior, and what's the verdict?

    MacBook Pro Aluminum 2.4GHz

    TIA

  • Re: Changing Macbook unremovable battery Dec 10 2009 @ 7:29 PM

If you follow directions about charging/discharging your battery so you don't kill it prematurely you should have no worries.

Overcharging aka (cooking) or completely discharging the battery a couple of times will kill it early - otherwise you should get years of use out of the battery.

At which point your warranty should be expired and opening the case to change the battery would not be an issue.

I imagine it would be similar to replacing a Macbook Air battery which is also not supposed to be user replaceable either.

  • Re: How can I backup my iBook G4 HDD and restore it to a new 320Gb? Dec 2 2009 @ 10:44 AM

Yes broken G4 connectors are a ''"Known Issue" with DIY repairs.

These need to be "worked" off gently - a note to that effect should probably be added to any G4 DYI case instructions.

That it's overheating is a sign that its possible your heat sync. should be recoated, or you have fan bearing or switch problems.

  • Re: PowerBook g4 17" keyboard doesn't work! Dec 2 2009 @ 10:37 AM

Sleep switch could be going. Set sleep delay for long time, uncheck put hd to sleep if possible.

Also if you battery is going, dropping into sleep/hibernate like this can be a sign.

  • Re: Airport card replacement for Macbook C2D? Dec 2 2009 @ 10:35 AM

Black goes far left ''as you look into the case from the front. Connect the grey wire next to it.

Check it out without sealing up the case. If that combo fails try the grey wire on far right side.

    Good Luck,

  • Re: Fan always at full speed after hard disk replacement in Powerbook G4 12" 1.33 GHz Dec 2 2009 @ 10:32 AM

Could be a small cable disconnected near the power light.

    OR

Known issue: "the whirring fan of death"

Small ic on the logic board loosens, you would have to be re-ball the logic board to fix. To see if this broken piece is the problem you put pressure, sometimes a LOT of pressure, on the palm rest to the left of the mouse and try to startup. If it starts up, then dies within seconds of removing your palm, your logic board is the problem.

    Good Luck,

  • Re: Stuck CD in MacBook Pro Dec 2 2009 @ 10:20 AM

Use two strips of double sticky tape (like for window insulation or wrapping) on 1/2 of an old CD/DVD.

You put two strips side by side to cover one half of the CD/DVD. You hold firmly onto the other 1/2 and slide it 1/2 into the slot.

Tilting and pulling you should be able to catch the mini CD/DVD and pull it right out. (As you pull you may want to hit the eject key.)

    No disassembly required.

    Good Luck,
