  • PowerBook G4 bootup problems after new Logic Board Oct 11 @ 5:52 AM

    Hello

I recently replaced the logic board on my G4 Powerbook 1.5ghz laptop. The previous logic board booted up fine, could be made a Target and worked perfectly through another mac. The only problem was that the graphics chip was gone.

I installed a new logic board - renewed thermal paste and renewed thermal pad with paste as well. Now on hitting start button, the fan and disk start up but then the boot-up chime begins and cuts off. Everything then seems to stop. I've tried booting in Target mode and then from install disk - always same result; interupted boot-up chime and blank screen. Install CD keeps reading though - perhaps that's significant.

I'm keen to keep digging into this - perhaps I've bought a dodgy logic-board. maybe I've missed something crucial.

    All suggestions gratefully received.

  • iBook G4 14" freezes when graphics are rich Apr 7 @ 5:47 AM

I've got a very nice 14" G4 iBook awhich functions fine, except that it doesn't seem to like sticking at any intense graphics processing. When I first acquired this as a faulty item it would freeze after a few minutes. The Genius Bar at my local Apple Store suggested it was a hardware fault and that a new hard-drive would sort it out. This did seem to solve the problem - up to a point. It trundles along very happily for hours in word-processing or even on long video compression tasks. But run anything graphics rich (like a game) and it'll go for ten minutes max before freezing. Does this sound like anything obvious? I can post further machine spec if anyone has ideas/needs more info.

    Many thanks

Thanks for responses. Model is A1095. I've been trying to boot form HD and then from install disk (1 of 2). Same symptoms persist even after PRAM reset. Fan and disk sound like they're getting up to speed, then chime begins and cuts out. Screen remains blank throughout.

One cncern is that I haven't applied thermal past correctly and that I used it where there was the remains of a thermal pad. One clue to this is that after my various attempts to reboot the underside of the Mac at the keyboard - around the processor - are very hot. I've never used a G4 PowerBook before, but this seemed excessive.

    Cheers

Thank you both - I haven't successfully tested a fan-assisted work-out, fans not being essential household items for the British climate. iStat Nano widget tells me that the fan is running at 0rpm though I don't know if that is the norm for G4 iBooks when running normally. The only other piece of info is that the pointer can still be moved via the track-pad after the rest of the screen freezes. And at the last test there was no sign of a temperature spike on iStat. I'll see if I can extend work-time by some form of external cooling, and if that yields results, will go for spare parts option. Many thanks again. GSJ
