That is rediculous! The white layer that used to be (until you got it wet) is above another layer that has red dye in it. When you get it wet it releases the dye that moves to the white layer turning it red. Short of removing the indicator, nothing you do will change that. Take some responsibility for damaging it.

yes, the only difference is the backlit one has special clear diffuser plastic and the white reflective backing with LED's. You dont even need the whole keyboard just these 2 "layers". Another note although not really important, the keyboard keys do not have the backlight info on them on the non backlight version. But as long as you memorize this you will be fine.
