I was about to post a long request for help but found the part I needed and learned I didn't have many options except replacing the part (Apple 820-1925-A, Apple Intel Mini interconnect board). I did and found several for sale at about $50 plus shipping/tax. Ordered from WeLoveMacs.com since they're just down in Santa Clara and I'm in SF.
And I found a terrific post on eBay from a guy with this part for sale who explains how to avoid the damage I caused - the ribbon cable goes to the little sound card, FWIW. Wish I could have bought from this guy since he did such an over-the-top job of explaining - but he's a few days more shipping from me. See his posting at:
This guy says it's not really possible to fix this problem with the connector, but I put the ribbon cable in the connector and then cut a couple of pieces of flat plastic packaging material small enough to fit into the front of the connector and hold it in. Since this machine is pretty much a test box I decided to spend the money on something else instead of the part plus the only thing that might fail if the ribbon cable comes out again is sound, so no biggie. I first thought the cable went to the SATA devices.

Hope this helps someone else.
