  • How do I transfer dual partitions to a new hard drive? Nov 8 @ 12:28 AM

I helped out my friend last week with installing a new 500GB drive on his MBP 15". He runs Bootcamp on his computer, and has both an OS X Leopard and Windows XP partition on his old drive. I tried to use both SuperDuper and Disk Utility to transfer over the XP partition; neither of them worked

  • Answer to: What should I do after I spill liquid on my device? Nov 5 @ 1:01 PM

I actually wrote an article called "Spills that Kill." You can read the full text here. Excerpt from the article: "Here’s a few tips in case a spill ever happens to you, whether it’s on a laptop any other electronic product: Don’t panic. Panic just complicates things.Remove power to your device as fast and soon as possible. If that means not saving your blog post, so be it. You can always view the auto-save, but there’s no auto-save function for your logic board.Shake out any liquid as soon as the device is turned off.Let the device dry in a manner that is conducive to getting the liquid out. If it’s a laptop, place it upside-down on a counter and let it relax for a day or two.Possibly disassemble parts of the device to verify that it’s dry, and/or to use a hair dryer to finish the job.Cross your fingers, and turn the device on."

  • Answer to: Other ways inside iPod Nov 4 @ 12:58 PM

Hey Danno, Believe it or not, opening an iPod Video is easier than some of the other iPods in Apple's lineup (iPod Classic and 3rd Gen nano come to mind). iFixit suggests using the plastic iPod opening tools because they do less damage to the exterior casing, and will not short any of the electronics inside. You can try using a metal spudger, but consider that: you'll scratch the exterior case much more easilyyou run a higher risk of cracking the display and/or the plastic you also run the risk of potentially shorting or damaging internal components. You can also try to start the opening procedure on top of the iPod by the hold switch. But be very careful -- you run a higher risk of cracking the display, which is why the iPod Video opening guide instructs you to start at the bottom.

  • Starbucks Barista Teardown Aug 19 @ 10:19 AM

    Quote from bradi:

Thanks for the marvelous tear down instructions. Question. I have this same mdl barista and the water/steam or whatever that goes from the machine into the coffee grounds doesn't seem as powerful as it once did. Do you recommend a full teardown and cleaning or is there something less intrusive I can do? Thanks!

Definitely take a look at your Barista Owner's Manual. It tells you how to clean your machine (without having to tear it down!). Hopefully that should take care of any problems.

By the way, you can grab a PDF version of the manual from Starbucks if you don't have your paper copy.

  • MacBook Pro 17" Unibody Teardown Jul 28 @ 2:47 PM

    Quote from kouma:

Can you try running the laptop without the battery, i.e. using only the power cable. Would it run?

    Yes, it would work fine.

    Quote from kouma:

Since I only use my laptop while its on my desk, thus always connect to the AC adapter, why shorten my battery's life if it can work without it.

You can work without the battery, but it's quite useful to have it in there. The battery's essentially a "backup," powering the computer should anything happen to the AC power. If you accidentally unplug the computer and don't have a battery, you risk ruining your hard drive or just losing information.

It's also not good for the battery to sit there with no charge. Read up on how to prolong the life of lithium ion batteries if you'd like more detailed information.

  • Installing PowerBook G4 Aluminum 12" 1-1.5 GHz Heat Sink Jul 23 @ 11:47 AM

    Quote from okiediver:

How on earth do the 7.5 mm heat sink screws work ? The ones with the springs? I had difficulty taking them out, and now I cant get them back in. They appear to have no threads on them yet all the instructions indicate to remove with a screwdriver. I dont get it-- after working on this for 2 days and I am stuck.

The screws connect to two posts coming up from the logic board. The post(s) may have popped off the logic board once you removed the screws. If so, you can try super-gluing the posts back to the logic board. There should be one post on either side of the CPU -- see Step 23 to get an idea of how they should look like.

  • User-Submitted Teardowns! Jun 4 @ 4:10 PM

Today we launched a new user-driven teardown platform. Our new online teardown creation tools allow anyone to easily author and publish teardown guides, complete with disassembly photos and technical details.

    www.iFixit.com/Teardown

Tons of people have asked us to publish their teardowns to our audience. This demand helped us realize the importance of releasing this platform for everyone, so we spent the last year polishing our tool and making it robust enough for anyone to create teardowns free of charge. We hope that people use our flexible teardown platform to create teardowns of devices of all kinds, not just Apple products. Writing a teardown is simple, and we wrote a step-by-step guide to show people how it’s done.

We are absolutely thrilled to be launching our new site. This platform has been a labor of love for a long time, and we’re excited to see what tinkerers all over the world create with it. Join us, and show the world what’s inside your gadgets!

  • Re: @ifixit.com: what type of camera do you usually use Nov 7 @ 11:56 PM

No, you're not blind. We edit our photos with Photoshop Elements, which I guess strips some of the information from the picture. Sorry about that.

But you're right -- lights make all the difference. With good lighting, you can take pictures with a point-n-shoot and get results similar to those with the D90.

It's the Metadata page for the Intel iMac 27" layout photo, found on step 1: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac-Intel-27-Inch/1236/1

This is a new feature that lets anyone and everyone look at the picture data on iFixit.

However, to answer your question more directly, we use a Nikon D90 with the kit lens :)

  • Re: Aluminum Powerbook mystery Aug 31 @ 11:00 AM

Unfortunately there's no way for us to narrow down your problem to a specific part, as multiple parts may be the culprit. Your best bet is to start by replacing the inverter and then moving on to other components if that doesn't solve the problem.

  • Re: PowerBook G4 15" Hard Drive Replacement Jul 17 @ 12:13 PM

Check out the hard drive software install guide and make sure you've done all the steps.

The 320 GB hard drive is compatible. I know from personal experience, as I witnessed first-hand the troubles you can encounter trying to upgrade a PowerBook G4 hard drive. Definitely check out the 320 GB Drive Troubles post that I wrote, and make sure that the drive is formatted with Apple Partition Scheme. The drive will not work if you set it to the Intel-based GUID Partition Scheme.

The RAM should not affect the hard drive in any way. According to EveryMac, your computer should support 2 GB of RAM.

  • Re: Totally technologically inept... HELP!! Jul 7 @ 3:05 PM

You can take a look at the keyboard removal guide for the 1.33 GHz iBook G4 12" to get an idea of how to flip up the keyboard. The steps are the same for other speeds of the iBook G4 12", so it doesn't matter if you have an 800 MHz machine -- the keyboard guide will still work for flipping up the keyboard.

  • Re: Aluminium G4 12" 867mh, heat sink, 7.5mm phillips w/spring (step 31) Jun 26 @ 3:59 PM

    Hi Randy,

Most likely the screws are stuck. Try to push them down a bit harder before turning them. We're not sure how hard you're pushing down, so please use caution -- we definitely don't want you to break your logic board.

    Hope that helps!

  • Re: Macbook 1,1 hard drive Jun 26 @ 10:09 AM

Maximum size drive that your MacBook will accept is 500 GB. If you use the selection menus on the left side of our home page, and narrow down to your specific Mac, only the drives that will work in your Mac will be displayed. As an example, these hard drives fit in a 1.83 GHz MacBook Core Duo (I wasn't sure if you had a 1.83 or 2 GHz).

  • Re: Ipod 5th gen (Video) won't power on Jun 24 @ 1:00 PM

    Hi Simon,

First of all, I wanted to thank you for giving us great details on what you've already troubleshooted. It certainly helps that you've narrowed down the potential problem areas.

At this point it might be either the logic board or possibly the hard drive cable. From all the information you've given us, it seems most likely that the logic board went out. If you have a super-nice friend with an iPod Video, you can certainly ask him/her to borrow the logic board / hard drive cable and narrow down the problem even more. If not, you can try purchasing just the hard drive cable to see if that works. We can't say for a fact that the hard drive cable is the problem, though, so you would be wagering $10 + s/h to forego an $80 logic board purchase.

    Hopefully everything works out!
