    I gave up - after much part swapping I came to the conclusion that it is a logic board issue. I have seen several phone with this problem.

    The DVD drive is connected via IDE and the harddrive via sata just like it came. I had to use a dual IDE cable from a pc because the mac one was missing. I know the newer IDE cables are different than really old ones and thought that could possibly be an issue
